I thought it would be a good idea to tell our customers in Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and the whole of the north east of England that at Wallace and Sons we DO NOT charge VAT; yes NO VAT here. Please be aware some companies charge Vat but may not quote this.

Here at Wallace and Sons we are proud of our pricing structure for carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning and leather cleaning and believe we offer a very fair price for a top quality service. We aren't the cheapest because we believe in doing the job right and have priced realistically BUT we aren't the dearest because, we believe that Wallace and Sons charge a realistic price.

Why is carpet and upholstery cleaning training so important

Today I just want to talk a little about the importance of Training within the cleaning industry and why at Wallace and Sons we hold this as a very important part of our business development.

This year alone I have attended the NCCA two day carpet and upholstery cleaning course, the NCCA advanced spot and stain removal course, Cleansmart one day upholstery cleaning and the LTT leather cleaning, minor repair and full restoration course. The reason for attending so many courses is simple, you can never know enough to ensure we do the best possible for each and every customer and we hear about so many companies with 20 years of one years experience, what does that mean? It basically means the operator is still cleaning in the same way as they did 20 years ago and worse still, sometimes they are using the same equipment. That is why at Wallace and Sons we attend so many carpet, leather and upholstery cleaning courses. It is also a chance to network with other carpet cleaners to share new ideas and experience. Don’t get me wrong, we not looking at fixing something that isn’t broken, just trying to get the best possible result for our customers.

From training in carpet and upholstery cleaning we have also learned that one cleaning system doesn’t fit all situations and that is why we offer dry carpet cleaning, low moisture carpet cleaning and Hot water extraction (wet or steam) carpet cleaning at Wallace and Sons. We know that to tie ourselves to just one system would not give the customer the best possible choice.

Recently we were invited to clean a domestic carpet in Sunderland, the customer was located 20 or so floors up in a tower block and the lift was out of order (again apparently), the customer had guests coming the next day and was needing it cleaning that day, if we only offered wet carpet cleaning it would have be impossible to lift the equipment all that way but the job was completed to the delight of the customer and since they have recommended us to others in the block of flats. On another occasion in Durham, on inspection of the carpet backing the plain carpet was woven, the pile was synthetic and loosely fitted. The scenario here is we have a carpet that could shrink so we advised the customer that the safest clean would be to perform a VLM or LM (dry) clean, we did and once again a very happy customer.

Without training it wouldn’t be possible for Wallace and Sons to be able to offer the best types of carpet and upholstery cleaning in Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and the North East. Also training introduces Wallace and Sons the chance to try the latest products available from different suppliers and this is something I’d like to talk more about next time.

Dry Carpet Cleaning

Our final cleaning method used at Wallace and Sons is very low moisture cleaning which is almost always called Dry Cleaning. We use HOST Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaner which is a soft, natural product that is environmentally friendly and works in much the same way as an ordinary kitchen sponge. Just like you would use a sponge to wipe up a spill, or to wash and absorb dirt from a counter or wall, HOST is used to wash and absorb dirt from your carpet fibers. As with using a kitchen sponge, you want to limit the amount of water you use while cleaning. Think of the carpet pile as a vertical surface, like a wall. If you use too much liquid, it will run down the yarn toward the carpet backing, just as too much liquid runs down a wall. If you allow this dissolved dirt to run down the backing, it can be more difficult to remove and can wick back.

Because HOST is a dry carpet cleaning system it carries the liquid ingredients to the carpet fibres in a controlled way. The soft, organic, natural HOST SPONGES contain all the necessary liquid to dissolve and absorb both water based and oil based dirt. It’s moistened with water, detergent and a small amount of safe solvent. And because HOST is a low moisture cleaning system, when you’re finished cleaning, the carpet is dry and ready to use immediately and this one of the main reasons Wallace and Sons offer this service.

Chemical and mechanical action is required to break the oil bond and pull the dirt away from the carpet fibres. Then this loosened dirt must be removed. HOST is formulated to dissolve both types of dirt and then to absorb it. HOST cleaning doesn’t leave a sticky residue to cause rapid resoling. A trace of SPONGES may remain in the carpet after vacuuming but it is not abrasive or harmful. This trace amount of SPONGES will be removed with subsequent vacuuming. It’s that simple to have your carpets dried cleaned by Wallace and Sons!

Low Moisture Carpet cleaning

There is a lot of information about the different types of carpet cleaning which is sometimes very confusing, I'll explain today about low moisture cleaning that we provide at Wallace and Sons. The method known as VLM or Very Low Moisture carpet cleaning is probably one of the most misunderstood.

Low moisture carpet cleaning is sometimes referred to as "dry cleaning", which it is not. Dry carpet cleaning involves spreading a dry compound, this is a complete different but another option for our customers available from Wallace and Sons which will be explained in the next blog.

The basic method is explained here, cleaning agents are mixed with water and then lightly sprayed onto the carpet with just enough moisture present to activate the cleaning agents and interact with the soil. After enough time to dwell the carpet is agitated using a rotary floor machine or another machine known as a cylindrical rotating brush machine is used to work the cleaning agents into the carpet and loosen the soil and other contaminants, the soil is removed by the brushes or pad because after agitating the carpet the remaining soil becomes encapsulated and is soaked up by the pad.

Although all carpet cleaning methods can be effective and have their strengths, low moisture carpet cleaning is very effective way to regularly maintain your carpets without using excessive moisture.

Using this type of cleaning at Wallace and Sons is normally used or advised when:

Customers request for drying reasons or other.
Commercial carpets.
Low Profile carpets.
Carpet that can Shrink when exposed to much water.
Situations were electrics are present (call centre etc).
Plus many others.

Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning

Carpets are normally one of the most expensive items to purchase for your home. When considering their cleaning and maintenance, you can often be confused by all the different systems that are on offer; that’s why at Wallace & Sons we offer the three main types of cleaning procedures. Carpets act as a filter in the home and collect all sorts of dust, grit and soil, using a vacuum regularly will remove a lot of dry soil but it does not remove those deep down soils that attach themselves to the fibres. Professional cleaning from Wallace and Sons will remove the deep down soiling and assist in maintaining the original look and lustre of your carpet.
Having your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis will extend their life expectancy; also it will keep them hygienic and looking good. Not cleaning carpets at all will reduce their life span significantly incurring the cost to have them replaced.

So today I will introduce the most popular type of carpet cleaning used by Wallace & Sons for your home. Hot Water Extraction (HWE), sometimes known as wet cleaning or steam cleaning. This in my opinion is the most thorough type of cleaning available for you BUT sometimes it can’t be used depending on the type of carpet being cleaned; this is why we at Wallace and Sons we are trained to test the carpet fibre type to establish the safest and best choice of cleaning method.

Our method is:

· Inspect carpet to establish type of clean.

· Qualify the type of clean with you the customer. (HWE).

· Thorough vacuum to remove as much dry soil as possible.

· Pre spray solution that matches carpet type and agitate.

· Allow a period of dwell time to allow the solution to do its magic.

· Inject Hot/Cold water into the carpet pile while extracting using a professional machine.

· Groom pile to normal position and allow drying time.

That concludes the procedure of HWE used by Wallace & Sons.
